Happenings….

….around TheGreatWall….
Not much…..
Outside of no rain –thought this was rainy season?– for over a week,
and temps in the 90’s,
and humidity to match.
Meaning if you have gardening to do
….and who doesn’t at this time of year?…
you had better have your butt outside,
working in the garden by 7:30AM.
And be done by 11AM,
and soaking that butt in the pool for the rest of the afternoon.

IMG_1334

After 4:30,or so,it just might be cool enough to take the camera out and see what’s going on…..

The plumerias are blooming like crazy….
IMG_1336
The red never ceases to amaze me.

IMG_1335
The first year the pink and yellow has bloomed!I’m in love with this one!

The yellow carries on.The original cutting for this came from my dad’s garden in St.Petersburg, before he passed.
IMG_1337

IMG_1339
The white has gotten so big(over 10’ tall),I can’t take a good photo of the blooms!

Both wild coffees are blooming….

Florida native Wild Coffee psychotria nervosa,Zone 10-11
-pushing the limits on this one,but so far, after 3 years,it’s still doing great!

IMG_1321
Zebra Long Wing on the Jatropha-sometimes they will pose!

IMG_1328
Blackberry Lilies are blooming already, this year.Kind of early.Mine are the freckle-less ones.

IMG_1326
Self seeded Blanket Flower.

IMG_1322
Cats on the parsley.I always plant extra just for this reason.

How are you doing in this Florida heat?

Wilting?

…or just floating in the pool?
I vote for floating in the pool…..

Peace ………

Only one of the many “paths-to-no-where” is shady.Underneath a stand of Norfolk Island Pines,it has been planted with white caladiums and Peace Lilies.Spathiphyllum.

In reality, there are Bird’s Nest Ferns,
IMG_1109
a Brazillian Tree Fern and two huge Staghorn Ferns back there, too. It became a place where I put things after TheTree went down. And they all have flourished.
but so have the mosquitoes…
no rhyme or reason to this area of the garden. But everything has grown and making nice with each other.A happy accident,I guess.

But it is the Peace Lilies that have flourished.
Surprisingly, all have started as divisions from one lonely house plant.

IMG_1115

It has become the only cool place to be in the heat of a Florida Spring/Summer.

-but you have to wear bug spray, there. It is close to the water and I am here to testify those mosquitoes are monsters!-

But,still, just walking backing there, one feels at least ten degrees cooler.
IMG_1116

and they do love to pose!
IMG_1108

…not like those pesky butterflies who refuse to sit still…

:: Peace::

Random thoughts and photos….

My mind wanders.Especially when I wander through the garden in the evening.I solve problems,I figure things out when I wander through the garden. So,bear with me,as my ADHD mind wanders, and my camera takes pictures….

Yellow African Iris dietes bicolorIMG_1072

Since I saw them at Naples Botanical Garden,a few years ago,I have wanted one.About 3 years ago I saw them at HD,and bought two.Just when I thought they were a bust and was ready to rip them out, this year, they have decided to bloom.Guess they heard me….

The Vitex is ready to bloom…
IMG_1076

Why do I always start renovations when it’s hot and the AC is running?I repainted the master bedroom-I couldn’t take the paint samples on the wall,anymore-,but now I’m obligated to paint the closet doors and have the carpet replaced with flooring to match the rest of the first floor. What was I thinking?I swear it goes on and on….

I really like the way this container,on the lanai, has come together. It took awhile, but I’m very happy with it.
IMG_1094

It has taken a year for it to have gotten to this point…Patience….
The last of the Iris blooms….
IMG_1079

Jasmine is almost finished.I’m gonna miss them when they’re done…but I do every year…In the evening, their scent is amazing….
IMG_1085

I really need to move the compost pile. But where to?
I wonder who the Bucs will take first in the draft….
The first plumeria buds!
IMG_1092

This is a yellow one.The cutting came from my dad,and it’s always the first to bloom, every year.

Gaillardia with Angel’s Tears.Nice combo.Another happy accident.
IMG_1088

Sooooo….
does your mind wander while you’re strolling through the garden?
Do you use it as time to solve the problems of the world?

Spring is busting out all over….

My mother loved music. She was actually, quite musical. Not only could she carry a tune, but she could play the guitar(Hawaiian and acoustic)and the piano.Unfortunately,I acquired none of her musical talent.Another thing, besides bad knees, and a love of gardening,I inherited from my father.Though I think I sound great singing in the car. When I was in first grade, the music teacher told her I could sing, and my mother burst out laughing.”That girl cannot carry a note!”
That may have scarred me for life.Which is why  I can be found driving down the interstate singing Jimmy Buffet at the top of my lungs. And sounding pretty damn good,at least to me,so there!
She loved Broadway shows and knew all the songs. And all the words.Whenever a Broadway show was playing at the old Melody Fair music tent,or Prudhomme’s Theater,in St.Catherine’s,Canada, she’d drag my dad  to see them. And every Spring, when the first blooms would pop out,my mother could be found,in the garden, singing that song to herself.
So,today,in spite of it,I found my self doing the same thing…and then,I found myself thinking,”Oh Gawd,I’ve become my mother!”
….and, yes,I did hum her silly song….

The Sweet Gum Tree has leafed out….IMG_1070

as has the Vitex Vitex agnus-castus

IMG_1064
I bought this one at SCCF,a few years ago,and it has grown into a large shrub.I have since found them in native landscape nurseries closer to home.I’ve even seen them at Lowe’s.It’s a Florida native and the mockingbirds love the berries that will follow the cute, little,Sputnik like flowers.

Wild Coffee Psychotria undata
IMG_1063
Another plant that I found at SCCF,but they have since become available at more nurseries. For more info….

Hidden Ginger Curcuma petiolata

Caladiums are finally breaking through the ground…

Now,if you’ll excuse me,I think I shall crank up some Jimmy Buffet,or maybe some Train, and sing,at the top of my lungs, and dance around the house…….

Scents-a-bility…….

It’s Spring time in Florida!
Which means that yesterday it was perfect weather for throwing open the windows.
Not a cloud in the sky, breezy, just loving life.
And the garden.
It also means,if you’re an allergy sufferer, which I am –the makers of ZyrtecD loves me-,you probably are having problems.
But today,…..turn on the freakin’ AC, ‘cause, crap,it’s hot!
Time to start watering the veggie garden every evening…..
But while watering,it’s time to start noticing the scents of the Florida Spring time garden!
….yep,I took my ZyrtecD this morning…
And the scents are awesome at this time of year.
Especially in the evening….

IMG_1033Coral Honeysuckle

IMG_1034
Banana Shrub Magnolia figo
My banana popsicle plant!

IMG_1037
Confederate Jasmine –the scent is glorious at this time of year.

IMG_1038Sweet Almond  Aloysia virgata –
I’ve trained this into a tree, and it is now over 9 foot tall.

IMG_1040
Angel’s Trumpet Brugmansia
I have two of these, that I have trained into trees, with a pathway in between. Both are over 10 feet tall.Their scent is most overwhelming in the evening. When I walk between these two ,in the evening, the scent is beyond words.

IMG_1050The first plumeria  buds have arrived!

So,now,I have Honeysuckle,almond,jasmine,banana popsicles,and soon-to-be Hawaii in my garden.

And not a sneeze in sight…..

Tatsoi….

Brassica narinosa
Spinach mustard,spoon mustard,Rosette bok choy,
….what ever you want to call it….
Where I first heard about this green,I have no idea. From one of the gardening blogs I follow,I think.
If it’s yours,I apologize in advance for not giving you due credit.
The gardening blog world is alive with info about Tatsoi.Everything I read about it said it was a great green.
Plus it’s fun to say.
Far be it from me to not jump on the band wagon.
’cause that’s how I roll….
So, I ordered some seeds, from here. And planted them.
Already they are up ……

IMG_1032

and I have plucked some of the leaves and used them in mixed green salads.
They are right!
It’s dee-lish!
According to the seed packet, the seeds can be planted in Florida, thru August.
Winner in my book.
….so far….

Emma’s Garden…………

When Emma was born,I planted “Emma’s Garden.” Itwas next to the old pool.
But the pool cracked when TheTree went down.
So,”Emma’s Garden” was moved.
This is it,today….

IMG_1022

The original garden has remained pretty much the same.
Just in a different place.
Which has turned out to be a better place
.
The Queen Emma Crinum has flourished.I have taken many pups from it and have them growing on the screened in lanai.Just in case the lubbers decide to stage a major attack on this one. Along with the Queen Emma Crinum are planted a pink Knock-out Rose,a coontie palm, and Angel’s Tears. All transplanted from the original garden.

IMG_1023

I bought the cherub at Tony’s Garden Patch,in,Tallahassee, when Emma was born.-that’s me,Emma –but, alas,it has since closed.

IMG_1023

This weekend, the Easter Bunny visited…me,too…and left some surprises…

IMG_1025

Then,a certain little girl visited…..me,Emma!….
and found those surprises…..
